SUMMARY:Sacred Heart Gathering for Peace and Justice. The Doomsday Clock: ... Nuclear War and Climate Change
DESCRIPTION:\n\nSacred Heart Gathering for Peace and Justice\n\n\n\n\nThe Doomsday Clock: Threats to Humanity from Nuclear War and Climate Change\nThe event is free\, and lunch is provided for those who register in advance. \nRegister online by clicking here. \nThe Address for the rectory is 1739 Ferry Avenue. The Church sits on Broadway at the intersection of Ferry Avenue and Jasper.  \n  \nFeatured Speakers:\nDominican Sisters Ardeth Platte and Carol Gilbert – Nuclear Plowshares Resisters Imprisoned for Their Actions\n“From two Dominican sisters: a master class in why the bomb is bad”\, by  Claire Schaeffer-Duffy\n“…Few Americans have had such diverse interface with the U.S. nuclear weapons apparatus as Platte\, 84\, and Gilbert\, 73. They have participated in major disarmament initiatives and interacted with those who profit from nuclear weapons\, those who guard them\, and those who suffer the consequences of U.S. investment in them. Their activism has merited accolades and incarceration. By their own estimate\, the women have together spent a total of 15 years in some 40 jails and prisons. Fiercely committed\, they remain dispassionate teachers… “[Now] For much of the year\, Platte and Gilbert are hopping buses and crossing the country [and the same in Europe] to give presentations  on the [United Nations] nuclear weapons ban treaty. [and continue to get arrested]” \nhttps://www.globalsistersreport.org/news/people/religious-life/news/two-dominican-sisters-master-class-why-bomb-bad\n \nDominican Srs. Ardeth Platte\, left\, and Carol Gilbert protest a military base planned for Okinawa\, Japan\, in front of the White House Feb. 27. (Provided photo)\n\nJohn Bach – Quaker Chaplain at Harvard University. \n\nJohn’s commitment to justice\, peace\, and nonviolent action began at a very early age when he visited the South after the racist murders of the three civil rights workers: Schwerner\, Cheney\, and Goodman.  He served  prison terms for draft resistance during the Vietnam War\, and then with equal commitment\, marked by additional prison terms\, has continued to resist militarism\, racism\, and the existence of nuclear weapons.  John Bach is a member of Cambridge Meeting in Massachusetts. He is author of Short Time: A Season’s Prison Journal \n\n\nAnanya Singh – NJ Student climate activist – CEO of Greening Forward\n\nAs a high school student with a passion for activism\, she has been working with a variety of organizations locally and nationally for the past 3 years\, focusing on environmental causes and climate change. I’ve been a part of community outreach teams\, written proposals and blog posts\, facilitated workshops and trainings\, and developed an understanding of the functionings of non-profit organizations and social movements. \n\n\n \n\n
