He is a co-author of the 1983 U.S. Catholic Bishops’ Conference Pastoral Letter\, “The Challenge of Peace.” One of the first bishops to speak out against the Vietnam War\, he is a founding member and past president of Pax Christi USA\, the American Catholic peace movement. He is also a founder and former president of Bread for the World. He has traveled throughout the world calling for an end to war and the abolition of nuclear weapons. He has spoken out courageously on behalf the victims of sexual abuse within the Catholic Church\, and he has advocated for the full participation and the rights of women and homosexuals in the Catholic Church. His homilies are read by thousands each week in the National Catholic Reporter.\nMark Doorley\, Ph.D.\, is the director of the Ethics Program in the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences at Villanova University where he has been since 1996. He is one of the founders of the Center for Environmental Transformation (CFET)\, in Camden\, NJ. He served as the chair of the board for the first 8 years of its existence\, stepping down this past December. He became involved in the effort that became CFET because he is convinced that Christianity has much to offer in terms of renewing humanity’s understanding of\, and relationship with\, the universe. He earned a Masters in Divinity at the Washington Theological Union in Washington\, DC in 1988 and a Ph.D. in Philosophy at Boston College in 1994.
