His CIA career began under President John F. Kennedy\, and lasted until the Presidency of George H. W. Bush. At his retirement in 1990\, he received the CIA’s Intelligence Commendation Medal. McGovern has been an outspoken commentator on intelligence-related issues since the late 1990s. In 2002 he was publicly critical of President George W. Bush’s use of government intelligence in the lead-up to the war in Iraq. In January 2006\, McGovern began speaking out on behalf of the anti-war group Not in Our Name. According to the group’s press release\, McGovern served symbolic “war crimes indictments” on the Bush White House from a “people’s tribunal.” In 2006 McGovern returned his Intelligence Commendation Medal in protest at the CIA’s involvement in torture. \nBonnie and John Raines – On March 8\, 1971\, John Raines\, his wife\, Bonnie\, a couple with 3 young children\, were part of an eight-member ring of anti-Vietnam War protesters that — while much of the country was gripped by the so-called “Fight of the Century” in New York between Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier — broke into the FBI’s headquarters in Media\, PA. Members of the burglary team\, armed with little more than a crowbar and wearing suits and ties\, then walked off undetected with suitcases stuffed with sensitive bureau files that revealed a domestic FBI spying operation known as COINTELPRO. The heist enraged the bureau’s legendary Director J. Edgar Hoover\, who launched a massive but ultimately futile manhunt. John and Bonnie continued as prominent members of the anti-war and peace movement. \nFor this event to be as inclusive as possible\, we want it to be a Fragrance Free Event. \n
