TALKING POINTS –
TRADE-OFFS & THE REAL COST OF
TRUMP’S MILITARY PARADE on June 14 in Wash., D.C
Trump’s military parade promotes militarism, which asserts that the government should achieve its goals—both domestic and global—through intimidation and military force rather than through cooperation, diplomacy, and negotiation. Trump’s military parade is promoting a more militarized world, in which governments are already raising their military budgets at the expense of human needs, are threatening and pursuing more armed conflict, and are becoming more and more repressive, threatening growing numbers of people.
Trump’s military parade is going to cost at least $45 million. Here’s a few life-saving programs that DOGE has cut – that could all be reinstated for much less than $45 million:
– $7 million in cuts to a grant to Malawi to reduce maternal and child mortality through nutrition, anti-malaria, and other services
– $5 million to World Vision to reduce child labor and forced labor in the tomato and pepper farming industry around the world
– $5 million to support sustainable, climate-smart fruit and vegetable farming for the Chickasaw nation and for Oklahoma farmers
– $10 million for UC Davis to research possible causes of cognitive disease
– $5 million for Wyoming to expand broadband internet access and connect people to job search opportunities

Trump’s 2026 military budget proposal – just for the Pentagon and nuclear weapons – is for more than one TRILLION dollars. That amounts to 62% of the entire discretionary budget Congress is trying to pass. If we add in the money for deportation and detention, for ICE and DHS, it comes up to 69% of the budget!
No wonder we keep hearing “there’s not enough money for health care, education, jobs, and climate!”

According to Senate Armed Services Committee chair Roger Wicker (R-Miss), the House’s $150 BILLION increase to the military budget, above and beyond the hundreds of billions the Pentagon asked for, is a “generational investment” in defending the United States.
But if any budget items deserve a “generational” increase, shouldn’t they be measures to protect future generations from climate change, prevent disease, end inequality, and fund smart diplomacy and foreign aid instead of war?

In 2024 the US sent $17.9 billion in weapons and other military support directly to the Israeli military, paying almost 40% of Israel’s entire military spending. If our taxpayer money did not go to fund Israel’s assault on Gaza, that same amount of money could have provided more than 1 million U.S. military veterans with VA health care.

Peace is more than anti-war. It’s a safe space. One where community can flourish, or people can just be.
