(doors open at 6:30p.m. with light refreshments)
DUCK SOUP, Starring The Marx Bros.1933. 68 min. Comedy. Directed by Leo McCarey. Paramount Pictures. English. No Rating.
DUCK SOUP is easily considered one of the greatest comedy masterpieces of all time. It stars Groucho Marx as Rufus T. Firefly, who becomes dictator of Freedonia under sponsorship of rich Mrs. Teasdale (Margaret Dumont). Firefly’s inept regime bumbles into war with neighboring Sylvania, with Harpo and Chico Marx hired as spies.
A thin plot simply provides a canvas for pratfalls and smart-alecky remarks in wacky Marx Brothers’ style. One scene after another features Groucho’s puns and double entendres, with wordless physical humor derived from the brothers’ early years in vaudeville.
In fact, in 1990, the U.S. Library of Congress deemed DUCK SOUP “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant” and selected it for preservation in the National Film Registry.
The sharp-tongued humor of Groucho Marx is absolutely ageless; the slapstick comedy is timely, and the subject matter is even more pertinent today.
Welcome to the familiar land of loony dictatorships, warped religion, and pointless warfare. See you and The Marx Bros. on the large screen December 7 at the Peace Center of Delaware County.
