DESCRIPTION:Keeping the Record Straight — What to Remember about the Vietnam War\, a talk by History Professor and Author\, Sophie Quinn-Judge\nSunday\, April 12 – Brandywine Peace Community Monthly Potluck Supper & Program\, 2nd Sunday of the month\,  at University Lutheran Church\, 3637 Chestnut Street\, Philadelphia\, PA 19104 (corner of 37th & Chestnut St\, in the University City section of the city) 4:30p.m. Potluck Supper (bring main dish\, salad\, or dessert). Program begins at 5:30p.m \nParking at rear of church in a small lot and on-street in front of church.  SEPTA bus #21 stop immediately across the street from church\, see www.septa.org \nSophie Quinn-Judge is the author of the forthcoming book A New History of the Vietnam War: The Search for Peace and a Third Solution\, Associate Professor of History\, Associate Director of the Center for Vietnamese Philosophy\, Culture and Society at Temple University.  For two years during the war\, she was also an American Friends Service Committee (AFSC) medical aid worker. \nOn March 8\, 1965\, a day after the “Bloody Sunday” Selma civil right march\, the first 3\,500 combat troops joined 24\,000 “military advisers” already in Vietnam. Two battalions of the 9th Marine Expeditionary Brigade were sent to Náµng to strengthen the security of the air base there. The air base was part of the “Rolling Thunder” bombing campaign started just days earlier on March 2. In three years\, the US would be so entrenched in the war that it would have half a million troops on the ground in Vietnam. \nThe talk by Sophie Quinn-Judge at the Brandywine Peace Community on April 12 is a challenge to the Pentagon organized 50th Anniversary of the start of the U.S. war in Vietnam and their continuing efforts to recast the war’s narrative as Hanoi’s fault\, see here www.vietnamwar50th.com/  Sophie is working on the Anti-War Peace Commemoration planned for May 1-2 in Washington D.C. at the New York Avenue Presbyterian Church entitled “Vietnam: The Power of Protest “\, http://lessonsofvietnam.com/ \n\nMore about our speaker… \nDr. Sophie Quinn-Judge is a highly accomplished scholar of Vietnamese history and culture. Sophie has received international recognition for her scholarly work on Vietnam\, including her highly-regarded book\, Ho Chi Minh: The Missing Years (1919-1941)\,  and essays on such topics as the history of women in 20th-century Vietnamese politics. Fluent in Vietnamese\, she spent two years in during the war working  as medical volunteer with the American Friends Service Committee (AFSC) and  has made numerous  visits to Vietnam since.  She has also served as a correspondent on Soviet- Asian affairs for the Far Eastern Economic Review  and has contributed to other publications such as the Guardian  (London). \nDr. Quinn-Judge received her Ph.D. from the School of Oriental and African Studies at the University of London and she was Research Coordinator of the Cold War Studies Programme in the International History Department at the London School of Economics and Political Science.  \n
