Beginning in 1977, in the wake of the Vietnam War, the Brandywine Peace Community began vigils and protest, as well as times of nonviolent civil disobedience, at General Electric plants producing nuclear warhead delivery systems in Philadelphia, PA, and, just outside of Philadelphia, King of Prussia, PA. On the morning of September 9, 1980, eight war resisters and religious peace activists entered one such site in King of Prussia, hammered on Mark 12A unarmed nuclear warhead casings, and poured their own blood on engineering blueprints. The eight were arrested and in February of 1981 were tried and convicted of trespass and other charges in the county seat, Norristown, PA. The Brandywine Peace Community organized walks of conscience, protests at the GE site (stating “the crime is HERE), and support vigils at the County Courthouse.
The action and trial of the Plowshares 8 was a watershed moment in the mass anti-nuclear weapons peace movement of the 1980s., and spawned a network of repeated Plowshares disarmament actions around the country and world. https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/00963402.2016.1145904
In 1992, with the end of the Cold War, GE sold its massive Aerospace/weapons division to Martin Marietta. Martin Marietta doubled in size and merged, the following year, with Lockheed to become the world’s largest war profiteer and the U.S.’ leading nuclear weapons contractor, Lockheed Martin. The Brandywine Peace Community has continued with its campaigns of protest and nonviolent resistance, repeated arrests, at the Lockheed Martin (formerly GE) complex in King of Prussia, located behind the King of Prussia Mall, the largest commercial shopping mall on the east coast.

Please do what you know in your heart and soul is the right thing to do–help save our people and good earth by producing products that improve the lives of our brothers and sisters, our children, grandchildren, our descendants, and all animate and inanimate of our good earth now under destruction by industries that thrive on violence…
