SUMMARY:Brandywine Peace Community Monthly Potluck Supper & Program: Screening of "SELMA"
DESCRIPTION:Brandywine Peace Community Monthly Potluck Supper & Program\, 2nd Sunday of the month\,  at University Lutheran Church\, 3637 Chestnut Street\, Philadelphia\, PA 19104 (corner of 37th & Chestnut St\, in the University City section of the city\, limited parking in lot at the rear of the church) \n4:30p.m. Potluck Supper (bring main dish\, salad\, or dessert).  Program begins at 5:30p.m. \n \nSpecial potluck screening of the 2015 Oscar nominated film\, SELMA\, about which A. O. Scott of The New York Times  said: “Even if you think you know what’s coming\, Selma hums with suspense and surprise. Packed with incident and overflowing with fascinating characters\, it is a triumph of efficient\, emphatic cinematic storytelling. Ann Hornaday of The Washington Post gave the film four out of five stars\, and wrote: “With Selma\, director Ava DuVernay has created a stirring\, often thrilling\, uncannily timely drama that works on several levels at once … she presents [Martin Luther King\, Jr.] as a dynamic figure of human-scale contradictions\, flaws and supremely shrewd political skills.”   \nPraise was not unanimous\, however\,  Glen Ford\, editor of Black Agenda Report\, criticized the film as a product of the “conservative Black political worldview” of producer and star Oprah Winfrey\, writing that it “insults Black SNCC civil rights heroes” but protects “the white\, rich Kennedys”. \nIf you haven’t seen SELMA\, you owe to yourself (and history) to see it.  If you have seen the film\, you might well see it again. \nFor more information\, call: (610) 544-1818. \nSELMA\, 2 hours and 7 minutes\, rated PG-13 (for disturbing thematic material including violence\, a suggestive moment\, and brief strong language). Stars: David Oyelowo\, Carmen Ejogo\, Tim Roth. Released last January 2015 around Martin Luther King\, Jr. Day and re-released the following March to mark the 50th Anniversary of the Selma to Montgomery march. \nWatch Trailer here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c9ouTjTndMA \n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
