BRANDYWINE PEACE COMMUNITY - P.O. Box 81, Swarthmore, PA, 19081--(610)544-1818
ATLANTIC LIFE COMMUNITY RETREAT, LABOR DAY WEEKEND, CAMDEN, NJ
Note: The Brandywine Peace Community was one of the earliest groups involved in the formation of the Atlantic Life Community thirty-four years ago and hosted a number of the first retreats. We are pleased that the ALC will be holding its next retreat over the Labor Day weekend in nearby Camden, NJ. We hope you might give thought to being part of the retreat especially as we approach the 30th Anniversary of Plowshares 8 "Swords into Plowshares" action, http://www.craftech.com/~dcpledge/brandywine/plow/webpages/plow8.htm that took place in King of Prussia at then General Electric, now: Lockheed Martin, on September 9, 1980.
If you have any questions, please call Bob Smith at the Brandywine Peace Community office, 610-544-1818.
The next Atlantic Life Community [ALC] Retreat will be on Labor Day Weekend, Friday, 9/3 – Monday, 9/6.
The theme of the retreat is "Permanent War Economy means Endless War (Most
Suffer, Few Profit): How do we help each other to Resist?"
The organizing committee is planning for several sessions that would cover this theme
with the hopes that we would really have some time to discuss what informs our actions?
Why do we do nonviolent symbolic action (faith based or otherwise), civil
disobedience/divine obedience/civil resistance? What are our hopes, expectations and
fears?
We will also be discussing/remembering the Plowshares 8 action as that week will be the
30th anniversary of the action, and the Camden 28 action as it will be the 39th
anniversary of that action.
There is a possibility of an ALC action during the retreat, depending on what we decide
as a community.
We will also have time for liturgy, workshops, and talent show. We encourage you to lead
a workshop if you have something to share or let us know if there is something you would
like to learn about.
The retreat will be held at The Romero Center in Camden, New Jersey Address: 2907
Federal Street [between 28th & 29th Streets] Camden, NJ 08105-2229.
There are 68 beds at the retreat center and lots of floor space. Please let Clare or
Martha know if you are coming and what your needs are. Please bring a sleeping bag and
towel.
We will be doing our own cooking. Heidi Hynes and Ellen Naney are on the meal planning.
Please contact them if you have food to offer or want to take responsibility for a meal.
Please contact Ellen Grady or Wendy Leitner re. child care ideas or needs.
We will be giving the Romero Center $1200.00 for our 4 days there. Please bring cash or
a check to help us with the payment and also to have some seed $ for the next retreat.
